Xavier H.M.

Who did you make your blog for?

As I finish tweaking my blog, there's less tinkering to do, even though I keep finding different things to mess around with.

Less tinkering means more time to write. More time to write means more time to think about what I want to write, and why.

I've already got a pretty clear idea of what I want to write; a quick look at my drafts folder will prove that:

I also keep a semi-hidden list of ideas on the blog.

Why am I writing though, and for whom?

I wrote a journal entry about this the other week. I guess I'm still wrestling with the question, especially since my Bearblog meta joke post got a ton of attention. There are a lot of new readers on my blog and RSS feed, which is intimidating.

I've also spent a lot of time browsing static website hosts like Neocities and Nekoweb, as well as the Discover feed here on Bearblog. I'll compare my site to other people's. I get hyper-fixated on things like my Nav bar, and how navigable my site is. Where am I leading visitors to my blog? Is everything accessible? Does it actually matter if it is or not?

There's also a lot of little things I've noticed that give me grief, like how in the hover graphic for my banner logo, the little action lines on the left are touching and the ones on the other side aren't:

Or how my Tags banner graphic has a single rouge pixel that I missed:

On mobile, my footer doesn't fit squarely in the screen; I was so self-conscious about it I recently added a disclaimer stating that my blog is best viewed on desktop, lol.

After putting so much time, effort, and thought into the visual design of my blog, I'm also wondering whether it was even worth it. I see so many blogs on the Discover feed that are very pretty, minimalist, and clean. I start to worry that maybe my blog is too busy. Maybe it isn't readable.

But, again, who cares?

My blog is mine. I made it look this way because I like it. And it makes me happy.

I made this blog for myself. I hope you made yours for yourself, too.
